Strasbourg Open Day of the European Institutions, 10 June 2018.

At this year’s open day in Strasbourg, which takes place on Sunday 10 June, the theme is the European Year of Cultural Heritage. The day’s events kick off with the official raising of the EU flag by Eurocorps at 9.30 CET. Children like adults are expected to follow a circuit with information stands, surrounded by some musical, educative and playful animations, in a family atmosphere. A debate is also planned between citizens and MEPs.

The Open Day programme offers an informative and playful experience, to be shared with friends or family members. Visitors will be able to deepen their knowledge on the functioning of the European Parliament -in which 751 Members representing the 510 million EU citizens from the 28 Member States seat during the plenary sessions. They will also get to know more about the political groups' projects.

Following the opening ceremony, marked by the raising of the European flag by Eurocorps at 9:30, European, regional or local elected representatives will deliver a welcome speech.

Then, from 10:00 to 18:00, visitors will be welcome in a festive atmosphere at the European Parliament headquarters.

From 11:00 to 14:00, they will be able to occupy the seats of Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), exchange views and debate in the hemicycle with MEPs from various political groups, namely from the S&D Group: vice-President Evelyne GEBHARDT (Germany),  and MEP Edouard MARTIN (France).

Less than one year away from the European elections, in May 2019, the MEPs will thus put themselves in a listening mode about citizens' concerns and strive to answer those.

From 14:00, visitors will also get the opportunity to follow presentations on the EU, the Parliament and the upcoming European elections of May 2019.

In addition, they will get the opportunity to exchange views with representatives of the association 'Reporters Sans Frontières' ('Reporters Without Borders'), laureate of the Sakharov Price in 2005. The Sakharov Price is awarded each year by the European Parliament to a person or an organisation defending the freedom of thought.

This year, for the first time, visitors will get the opportunity to discover the Simone Veil parlamentarium, opened in July 2017. Thus, they will be able to attend a 360° screening of a film and get familiar with the European Union achievements in an interactive space.

About 30 stands of EU institutions and agencies, and associations with a European scope will enable citizens of all ages to inform themselves and exchange on EU topics.

Permanent animations, all along the circuit, and two stages on which some musical groups will perform, will give a glimpse of European cultural diversity to visitors.

For the younger ones, some playful activities are planned.

Just like for the last Open Days, the European Parliament offers free shuttles by boat between the Palais Rohan and the Parliament boat-stop. The boat shuttles will circulate the whole day in both directions.

Make the most of this opportunity to take pictures or selfies in the European Parliament beautiful buildings or to eat a bite at the cafeteria or the stand of young farmers.

No doubt this day will be an unforgettable experience for everyone!
