The Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament has expressed delight at developments in the Czech Republic, which has now ratified the Lisbon Treaty. The Group has also highlighted the fact that the European Union, once the new Treaty comes into effect, will become more efficient, more coherent, more prosperous and more visible on the international stage.

The new Lisbon Treaty will provide the European Union with greater resources, enabling it to work better and address more effectively the problems facing our societies and citizens today. It will enable the EU to press home its political, social, environmental and economic role at world level, declared Group president Martin Schulz. Lisbon will offer us the means to act on a more coordinated and more effective basis. It will strengthen the powers of the European Parliament and therefore reinforce the Union’s democratic legitimacy, added Martin Schulz.
