The Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament welcomed the results of the EU-US Summit (leaders of the European Union and the United States), which took place in Washington (3-4/11/2009).
Said Adrian Severin: " The EU-US Summit declaration proves the existing political will from both sides to enhance cooperation in order to find solutions on issues of global concern, particularly climate change, development, energy and health ".
"Particularly our objective for an ambitious and comprehensive international climate change agreement in Copenhagen is now attainable and we must work together on it from now ", added Adrian Severin.
The new declaration on disarmament and non-proliferation between the EU and US is a very good step forward. The S&D Group fully supports the aim of the Obama Administration to work towards a world without nuclear weapons.
Said Adrian Severin:" A successful outcome of the 2010 NPT Review Conference is crucial. A crucial step in this context would be the removal of all remaining US nuclear weapons in Europe."
The Group of Socialists and Democrats welcomed also both commitments for actions to assure a strong recovery and to undertake financial regulatory reforms to improve the resilience of the financial system to prevent future financial crises.
The big bonuses of financial firms continue to spur outrage on both sides of the Atlantic.
Said Pervenche Berès: " This indicates that banks have not learned their lessons from the global financial crisis, while among the taxpayers who bailed them out last year unemployment rates are still on the rise. We owe it to our citizens to set strict international financial regulations so this will no happen again".
