On Wednesday, Parliament approved by a crushing majority a resolution calling for complete transparency from the European Commission during its Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) negotiations.
There are multiple concerns: as well as the danger of "graduated response" being re-introduced, the upholding of citizens’ fundamental rights in terms of freedom of speech, privacy and data protection, and even the non-liability principle applied to internet service providers and website hosts, could be jeopardised.
Kader Arif, S&D Group spokesperson on international trade and initiator of this joint resolution: "I am opposed to the way in which the ACTA negotiations are being conducted, both in terms of the method and what we know about the substance. Transparency is not only a principle, but also a right. Refusing Parliament this right is tantamount to ignoring the people."
"This battle must be fought. SWIFT was a first step. If the Commission does not provide any clarification, ACTA could be the second," concluded Kader Arif.
