The report covers several aspects which were part of the Commission's communications of April and October 2010 and comes in the context of generalised public deficit and fiscal consolidation in many Member States, bringing therefore fresh solutions in this respect but also drawing strong conclusions from the financial crisis.

 

The adoption of this report would the first strong signal of the European Parliament in favour of a financial transaction tax at a time where the Commission has an ambiguous approach both showing willingness to regulate financial actors but exempting them from taxation. We also have to point at the hypocrite discourse of some right wing leaders, calling for a form of taxation of the financial sector, but only at global level, where we all know it is most unlikely to be implemented.
