Today the European Socialists and Democrats jointly organised a hearing with the European Liberals (ALDE) on 'The Romanian Democracy - Political abuse and citizens' reactions'. The hearing was very well-attended and various speakers from Romania and Brussels discussed how to safeguard democracy in Romania and prevent further moves towards authoritarian structures in the country. In recent days demonstrations against the Romanian government have continued and been held all over the country.
Speaking at the hearing, S&D Group Leader Hannes Swoboda said:
"European history shows what it means to be democratic or non-democratic. The latest developments in Romania are a dangerous deviation from the principle of democracy.
"By-passing parliament and issuing government decrees instead of democratic laws cannot be tolerated. If people realise that the parliament is not heard, they will rightly go onto the streets. That is what we see happening in Romania.
"The latest discussions on sanctions against Romania are wrong. I want to make it clear that we do not want to interfere in the country but fully support and stand with the Romanian people".
