A series of anniversary events, celebrating the foundation of the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), are taking place in 2012. While the ECSC Treaty was signed on 18 April 1951, the Inaugural meeting of the High Authority and the Consultative Committee took place on 10 August 1952. The first President was Jean Monnet, the inspirational French leader, who along with Robert Schuman took the first decisive steps towards establishing today's European Union.
The ECSC had at its core, the concern for the welfare of workers in the coal, steel and related industries, especially in health and safety at work and in dealing with industrial restructuring in a responsible manner. The Consultative Committee, set up with equal numbers of trade union and employer representatives was the real beginning of the European Social Dialogue.

To mark the momentum, on 21 June 2012 the Socialist & Democratic Group of the European Parliament will hold a conference 'A Vision for Social Europe - 60 years on', from 9:00 until 12:30.

Guy Ryder (International Labour Organisation) - 'A world-wide social vision'
Manfred Warda (International Federation of Chemical, Energy, Mine and General Workers' Unions) - 'A world-wide social vision for the mining industry'
Representative (State Administration for Work Safety, Beijing) - 'The EU-China Programme for Health and Safety in High Risk Industries'

An international photo exhibition will also be held in the European Parliament from 18 to 22 June, with photos of miners and steelworkers from the EU, China, the US and South Africa.
