Research deserves enough funding; today said Edit Herczog, vice-president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, following the presentation of the EU's draft budget for 2013 by the European Commission.
Edit Herczog, a member of the parliamentary Industry and the Budget committees said:
"The Group is worried by the trick to finance in 2013 the missing 360 million euros for the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) with so called efficiency savings from the Seventh Framework Programme for Research.
"The Parliament has already told the Commission and the Council that redeploying appropriations from other FP7 projects to ITER is not the right answer.
"An important pillar for a competitive economy based on sustainable growth and employment is research. We need to find a better balance between the different big EU programmes under heading 1A (Competitiveness, Growth and Employment). We know member states are cutting their budgets and the EU must provide the added-value to prepare the grounds for a smart economic growth.
"I would like the Commission to provide more information about its solutions on financing extra costs in this final year of the current multi-annual financial framework.
"The EU must be a reliable partner for the ITER project, probably the most ambitious scientific experiment. It aims at developing a new way of producing energy based on the process of fusion that occurs in the Sun. This would be a cleaner and cheaper source of energy."
