The European Parliament today called for new measures to reduce the pay gap between men and women, in a resolution adopted in Strasbourg with the full support of Socialists and Democrats,
Said S&D spokesperson on women's issue Britta Thomsen: "Equal pay for equal work and for work of the same value has been a basic principle in the values of the EU since the Rome Treaty was signed.
"Despite this, women across the EU earn on average 16.4% less than men.
"Progress is extremely slow and in some member states, the pay gap has even widened. That is why we are calling for a revision of the EU legislation.
"The existing legislation should be reinforced with appropriate sanctions including fines, penalties and disqualification from public benefits. We also recommend appointing an Equal pay Champion to monitor progress made in each member states.
If we want progress and further reduce this type of discrimination, all partners, the EU, national governments, trade unions and employers should all be committed to the task."
