The president of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Hannes Swoboda, today sent a letter to the president of the Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso and to the president of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy calling on them to urgently address youth unemployment.
Mr Swoboda passed the appeal to the Commission and to the 27 heads of state and government after it was drafted by over 250 young Europeans during a youth conference organised by the S&D Group on June 6 and 7 under the title 'I want a job, and I want it now'.
Mr Barroso and Mr Van Rompuy today received the appeal drafted by young Europeans, along with a letter from Mr Swoboda calling for decisive action:
"Europe is facing a continuously worsening youth employment crisis. Youth unemployment has increased dramatically as a result of the crisis and during 2011 it reached an unprecedented 5.6 million.
"One out of five young Europeans are looking for work and the unemployment figures are not likely to improve until 2016 according to the International Labour Organisation (ILO), while policymakers are not doing enough to reverse the trend.
"I hope that the voice of Europe's youth will be heard, taken up and translated into urgent actions to tackle the soaring youth unemployment rates in Europe."
