Following strong criticism by progressive members in the European Parliament, the EU Council has changed its mind and agreed to honour the commitments made to EU researchers for the year 2012 (see previous press release).
S&D Euro MP Edit Herczog, S&D Group negotiator for the research budget, said:
"The Council intended to cut 70% of payments to the European research programme. I am glad they reversed their decision.
"However, we will remain vigilant as the Commission has already signalled to the budget authority that there might be – on the basis of a very conservative approach – a shortfall payment appropriations by the end of 2012 for financing policies supporting growth and investments in Europe.
"We should all work together to find a community solution for the future of the research programme."
S&D spokesperson on research Teresa Riera, said:
"If we want to change the economic growth model and lay the groundwork for a globally competitive EU economy we cannot neglect research. It is fundamental for boosting smart growth and quality jobs."
