Following the recent developments in Romania, Hannes Swoboda, President of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, sent a letter to Commission President José Manuel Barroso and spoke to him personally today, urging him to ensure the European Commission proceeds swiftly with an objective analysis of the situation.

 

 

"The Commission's assessment should take into consideration the roles of all institutional players in the events which have led to the present crisis. It should also assist in developing possible solutions to improve the sustainability of systemic checks and balances.

 

"I have refrained from judgements until now out of respect for the Commission and its critical role as guardian of the Treaties."

 

 

"Unlike other politicians and political groups, the S&D Group and I have always stood firm in supporting fundamental rights and the rule of law. We will not tolerate any violation of European law or values by any of the member states or by any government in office."

 

"We have full confidence in the objectivity of the European Commission's analysis, evaluation and recommendations."
