Following the refusal of the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund to extend deadlines for the Greek government to implement reform programmes, Hannes Swoboda, President of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, urged the Greek government to redouble its reform efforts.
"I am deeply disappointed that Greece has not fulfilled many of the reform commitments needed to get the Greek economy back on track.
"The S&D Group has criticised many of the Troika's demands for lacking social balance, but we have always been clear on the need to reform the state administration and to make targeted, reasonable spending cuts."
Hannes Swoboda called on the Greek finance minister to take the lead on implementing the necessary reforms:
"It is now up to the new government and especially to the finance minister, Giannis Stournaras, to implement these reforms. Mr Stournaras has the experience and knowledge to do this efficiently and quickly.
"The success of these reforms would be a pre-condition for any renegotiation of the Memorandum with the Commission, the International Monetary Fund and the European Central Bank."
