Following the publication of the European Commission's latest CVM (Co-operation and Verification Mechanism) progress report on Romania, the S&D Group have reiterated their full support for the European Commission's recommendations, particularly on the reform of the judiciary and the need for respect of the rule of law, in line with previous statements.
Hannes Swoboda, President of the S&D Group, welcomed the Commission's progress report:
"With this report the new Romanian government has a blueprint for reform and a historic chance to establish a viable and independent judiciary. Some of the recent controversial decisions will be repealed and many of the long-term weaknesses can be corrected; weaknesses which have not always been criticised by the Commission in the past unfortunately.
"I can only invite the Romanian government and parliament to take up the different recommendations and transform them as quickly as possible into reality to create a new and modern constitutional basis for the country.
"Prime Minister Ponta's latest assurances are a positive signal for democratisation and a real chance for much-needed long-term constitutional reform."
He also urged the Commission to monitor the use of emergency legislation in all member states:
"It would be good if the European Commission also took note of recent developments in Europe to look with more care and diligence into the democratic situations in different member countries.
"It is necessary to look carefully at other countries like Slovenia where the use of emergency legislation has recently increased in non-emergency situations. It is absolutely necessary to reduce the frequency of emergency ordinances to a strict minimum."
