Yesterday's referendum on the impeachment of President Traian Băsescu is not valid due to a turnout of 45.92%, below the required 50%+1. However preliminary numbers show that over 80%, a clear majority of participants, voted 'Yes' to the dismissal of President Băsescu.
Hannes Swoboda, President of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, commented:
"There were no winners in the referendum in Romania. Now all political parties should work to make sure that Romania will not be the loser. The political forces must act responsibly for the country and stop the in-fighting which could endanger Romania's credibility and position in Europe.
"Everybody in Romania but also in the whole of Europe should now stop talking about a coup d'état. This was a democratic process foreseen in the Romanian constitution and all accusations about electoral fraud have been proven wrong."
Swoboda continued by urging all parties to work constructively together:
"The priority for Romania is now to have an efficient government in which all members work constructively together to continue the reforms the country needs. Stabilising the economy, achieving necessary judicial reforms and reinforcing the fight against corruption must be the focus, not internal feuds.

"On the basis of this inconclusive result the political forces should be prepared for a fair and democratic election campaign. It will be the people of Romania who will decide in autumn who should govern the country.
"Should Traian Băsescu return to the presidency of the country he will need to respect the majority in parliament and finally try to overcome political divisions, as this is the most important task of a president."
