Social democratic politicians today moved again on the offensive on the euro crisis, urging for a clear common European answer.

Siding with the German opposition leader Sigmar Gabriel and Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann on their recent calls for a quick and sustainable reaction to the ongoing attacks against some Euro countries, S&D leader Hannes Swoboda said:

"Their fear that these financial attacks against the "South" will also affect the "North" is fully justified.

"The hesitation of some governments, including the German one, is dangerous for the whole European project. So far, Chancellor Merkel has treated the eurozone crisis as a crisis of fiscal discipline, instead of recognising that budget deficits are an aftershock of the global financial crisis, aggravated by lack of growth, and turned into a sovereign debt crisis by the political paralysis of the EU.

"The extremely high unemployment, especially of the younger generation, is not only an economic and social problem but also politically dangerous. European governments must act quickly and they should think less about their domestic political fate, and more about the common fate of its citizens. The positions of Sigmar Gabriel and Werner Faymann are important signals for the upcoming congress of European Socialists at the end of September".

Concerning the debate on Monti's remark about the role of national parliaments, Swoboda said:

"It is clear that Monti has not put into doubt that they have to play an important role in solving the crisis. But in future we need a much closer cooperation between the national parliaments and the European Parliament.

"A strong position of national governments and a close cooperation between national and European institutions, especially of parliaments, is the condition for solving the present crisis. Only on this basis the different national reactions will not prevent European solutions. We have to take Monti's reflections seriously and work on promoting European democratic solutions and not rely merely on national parliamentary democracy".
