Hannes Swoboda, leader of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament (S&D), today reiterated his call on EU and Romanian political leaders to "take a clear and unambiguous stance on the defence of democracy and the rule of law".
"On behalf of the S&D group I want to make it clear again that our group will not accept pressure on the judicial authorities in any form whatsoever or from whomsoever.
"It is our group's firm policy to defend democracy, rule of law and the independence of the judiciary in all member countries. I would wish for all the political groups and their prominent representatives to act in the same way.
"In this respect it is very symptomatic that the EPP is only calling on the present Romanian government and not also to President Basescu and his followers. Political pressure on the judiciary authorities by any political force should not be acceptable at all".
With regard to the controversy on the recent appointment of Romanian minister Dan Sova and his previous remarks on the Holocaust, Swoboda said:
"We expect from all government members inside the EU to make their position clear on the dark periods of their national history. Again, this must be true for members of the Hungarian, the Romanian or any other European government or parliament.
"Therefore, I hope that the newly appointed Romanian minister Dan Sova has learnt his history lesson and that he will make it clear publicly.
"There must not be any doubt about the position of any government member about the Holocaust".
