EU creates four new bodies to supervise financial markets

A key political agreement on supervision of financial markets was reached today in Brussels by the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers. The agreement involves the creation of three European supervisory authorities on financial services, the banking system and the insurance and occupational pensions sectors and the creation of a European systemic risk board (ESRB).

European Socialists and Democrats voiced concern today in Brussels as two suspected terrorists coming from the US were arrested early this morning at Schiphol airport, in Amsterdam.
Claude Moraes, S&D Spokesperson on civil liberties, home affairs and justice, said: "Regardless of the results of the investigation on the two suspects, it is astonishing that the US security system did not prevent abandoned luggage to be carried from Chicago to Washington.

Outrage at French expulsion of up to 1,000 Roma people today blew up into an EU embarrassment for the Sarkozy government as a pivotal group of Euro MPs called for parliamentary statements by the European Commission and Council. The European Parliament's main progressive group, the 184-strong Socialists and Democrats, accused France of breaching EU law and cited provisions on freedom of movement to underline its claims.

The ICJ ruling on Kosovo is "neither a cause to claim victory nor a cause for depression", said the foreign affairs spokesman of the European Parliament's main progressive group today. Instead, said Adrian Severin, vice-president of the 184-strong Socialists and Democrats group, the parties should be encouraged to address outstanding, unsolved issues in an EU framework.

Stress tests on 91 EU banks must be fully transparent if they are to be credible, said members of the European Parliament's main progressive group, the 184-strong Socialists and Democrats today. Group spokesman on economic and monetary affairs Udo Bullmann of Germany said: "The decision of EU banking supervisors to carry out these tests should help to strengthen confidence in financial markets.
