The fight for women’s rights goes on

committee on women's rights and gender equality to support a resolution on sexual and reproductive health and rights

S&D Euro MP Edite Estrela today led a majority in the Parliament's committee on women's rights and gender equality to support a resolution on sexual and reproductive health and rights.

The original text was sent back to the committee by the plenary after intense opposition from the conservatives.

Following today’s vote, Edite Estrela said:

"Once again, the conservatives joined the extreme right to reject a text that would deliver progress on women’s rights. They have used all the procedural tricks possible to avoid a new vote. It is unacceptable that the right and far right joined forces to block a transparent and democratic process.

“Despite the many lies circulating about the content of the report and a very aggressive campaign led by the most conservative movements in Europe, we managed to win the vote."

S&D group spokeswoman Britta Thomsen added: "The S&D Group will keep fighting to guarantee sexual and reproductive health and rights for everyone in Europe and beyond."
