The president of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament, Gianni Pittella, today congratulated the PSOE (the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party) for its decisive victory in the regional elections held yesterday in Andalusia.

Gianni Pittella said:

“Citizens in Andalusia have clearly chosen a progressive project which offers alternative solutions to right-wing austerity.

“This result is a clear message from the middle and working classes to the national government: there needs to be a change, because the iron fist with which the right-wing People's Party (PP) has implemented reforms has left many unprotected.

“This inspiring victory strengthens PSOE in this new period led by Pedro Sánchez, and it also strengthens social-democrats across Europe.”

The leader of the Spanish socialist delegation in the European Parliament, Iratxe García Pérez, said:

“Through her serious work in Andalusia, Susana Díaz has proved that the crisis can be faced without undermining social protection and while ensuring solidarity. This is what we want for Spain and this is also the project that we Socialists and Democrats are fighting for in Brussels at this crucial time for the European Union when both economic recovery and social cohesion are at stake.

“In the face of divisive forces and those who take advantage of fear, it is time for unity, it is time to build bridges and put forward proposals to improve the living conditions of our citizens.”
