The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament have expressed their support for the French socialists following the first round of the regional elections in France.

The president of the S&D Group, Gianni Pittella said:

"The total gained by the Front National in this first round of the French regional elections is worrying. We understand the concerns and anxiety felt by the French people after the terrible attacks in Paris on the 13 November.

"But France is not alone. All the countries of Europe are facing the same challenges: unemployment, the fight against terrorism and the migration crisis. These global problems demand European solutions. The French government is sparing no efforts, at home or at a European level.

"The Parti Socialiste has shown a strong sense of responsibility by deciding to withdraw its candidates in the regions where it is necessary to block the Front National.

"We are united behind our French comrades. History has shown us that when the left is united, it can win. We call on the left-wing people of France to come together next Sunday and vote en masse against the Front National."
