Following the agreement reached yesterday by the Eurogroup on the completion of the financial assistance programme for Greece, S&D Group president, Udo Bullmann, stated:

“We welcome the agreement reached yesterday by the Eurozone finance ministers. It opens up a credible path for Greece to exit the financial assistance programme successfully, honour its commitments, and take back its destiny into its own hands. Greek people can now turn the page of austerity and build a more stable and stronger country for the next generations.

“Pierre Moscovici and Mário Centeno have made substantial contributions to the success of the programme. The Eurozone and the European project have been on the brink of collapse more than once during the financial crisis. We are grateful to Moscovici and Centeno for their commitment and invaluable contributions to resolve them.

“The focus must now shift to the deepening of the Economic and Monetary Union in a way that makes repeats of the Greek situation impossible in the future. The next Euro summit must signal that member states are ready to act. S&Ds have their priorities set and stand ready to put good ideas, such as the European Monetary Fund and a substantial Eurozone budget, into practice as soon as possible.”
