Labour MEPs, ahead of today's key debate in the European Parliament on terrorism, have reiterated their support for strong anti-terrorism and anti-radicalisation measures following the Paris terror attacks, including support for PNR (Passenger Name Records) proposals from the EU.
At present, 14 out of 28 EU Member States are in the process of setting up PNR systems covering flights in and out of their countries - an EU system possibly being proposed.
Claude Moraes MEP, chair of the European Parliament LIBE committee, and Labour's European spokesperson on civil liberties, justice and home affairs, said.
"Labour MEPs have never been opposed in principle to EU PNR. Today, Labour MEPs believe an EU PNR which is comprehensive and strikes the right balance between security and privacy is one which should be negotiated as quickly and effectively as possible, as one tool in the fight against terrorism.
"The European Commission have still to set out in detail their proposals, but Labour MEPs fully support enhanced cooperation between Member States and stronger anti-radicalisation measures.
"Tonight, I will be representing the European Parliament and discussing the proposals from the Commission and Member States at the Justice and Home Affairs Council in Riga.
"These proposals will be wider than issues to do with data collection alone. They will include cooperation between intelligence services, the work of EU agencies such as Europol, and strong anti-radicalisation measures."
