MEPs formally voted in the new team of European Commissioners today, 423 votes to 209, with 63 abstentions.
In a speech to the European Parliament, Glenis Willmott MEP, Labour's Leader in Europe, told new Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker:
"Mr Juncker, I am sure you're aware of the magnitude of the job facing your Commission.
"With a Europe still struggling to create jobs and growth, a Europe still faced with the consequences of climate change. A Europe where people are turning their backs on mainstream politics in favour of the extremes.
"It's easy to see why many people say the EU is in crisis. This Commission has the opportunity to turn the tide and take a different approach."
Mrs Willmott added:
"Here are a few suggestions: revise the posted workers directive, and stop the exploitation of migrant workers, and undercutting of local pay and conditions. Take action to protect people from the scourge of precarious employment, such as zero hours contracts.
"Tackle excessively high energy prices across the EU. And get our young people into work.
"Mr Juncker, this Commission cannot just defend the status quo. Europe is a force for good in the world. But it could be so much better. It will need leadership and courage to make the change we need. That's the challenge.
"Mr Juncker, are you up for it?"
