Concerning the reaction of the European Parliament to the Turkish ships entering Cyprus' designated exclusive economic zone (EEZ), the S&D Group has rejected reports published in certain Cyprus media outlets accusing the S&D Group of hostility towards Cyprus' sovereign rights.

"This information is simply false", stated the S&D Group's president, Gianni Pittella. He highlighted that he himself immediately expressed the Group's concerns over the Turkish challenge to the sovereign rights of Cyprus.

"There is no doubt that we must defend international law and the sovereign rights of Cyprus, a member state of the EU, in its EEZ" , said S&D Group president Gianni Pittella

Allegations that the president of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, tried to block any parliamentary initiative on the issue are also false.

Cypriot S&D MEP Demetris Papadakis said that "the president of the European Parliament should be left out of this false controversy."

The S&D Group, with other political groups, will propose a debate in the European Parliament on the Turkish actions in Cyprus' EEZ.
