Relaunching Europe in Thessaloniki - New ideas to get out of the crisis

Thessaloniki Relaunching Europe

'Relaunching Europe', the pan-European initiative from the Socialists and Democrats (S&D Group) in the European Parliament will come to Greece on 23 January. We will host an event with an in-depth debate on seeking new ideas on how to get out of the crisis.

Young entrepreneurs, professionals, politicians, academics, representatives from citizens’ initiatives and journalists will take part in a real debate that will offer food for thought and inspiration for action and political initiatives.

The Greek people have suffered under austerity measures for years now. It has become clear that this political approach cannot continue any longer. The current political proposals have not been enough to satisfy young Greeks and many are seeking their own innovative entrepreneurial solutions. We should listen to their views.

The event will be structured in two parts. In the first panel, successful professionals and entrepreneurs from diverse sectors will share their ideas and experiences. And in the second panel, politicians and academics will take up the ideas from the previous presentations to answer questions and come up with practical policy proposals.

Well-known journalist Prokopis Doukas will moderate the debates.

Short introductory remarks will be made by Hannes Swoboda, the president of the S&D Group, as well as Evangelos Venizelos, the president of the Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) and Greek deputy prime minister and minister of foreign affairs. Concluding remarks will be made by Sylvana Rapti MEP, the head of the PASOK delegation in the S&D Group.

The panel of politicians and academics will include the mayor of Thessaloniki Yannis Boutaris, French S&D MEP Liem Hoang Ngoc, associate professor at Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Lina Papadopoulou, and the president of the civil servants' social insurance fund (OPAD) Michalis Koutras.

The panel of young entrepreneurs will feature Tassos Flambouras (Aventurine), Dimitris Kalavros-Gousiou (TEDx Athens, Nest Media, Found.ation), Nicos Philippou (ex-basketball player and manager of the national team), Dimitris Rigopoulos (Kathimerini), Melanie Ulyatt (One To One Support Services) and Marco Veremis (Upstream), presenting their innovative perspectives. The final programme will be available shortly.
