Renowned economist Thomas Piketty author of the book bestseller "Capital in the 21st century" will be the key speaker at the Progressive Economy annual forum next Wednesday in Brussels (see full programm here).

S&D Group president Gianni Pittella will give the kick-off of the conference which will award this year winners of the Progressive Economy call for papers.

Mr Piketty will set out his ideas and proposals on public debt, taxation and inequality in Europe with members of the S&D Group including vice-presidents Maria João Rodrigues (economy and social affairs), Kathleen van Brempt (sustainable development) and Isabelle Thomas (budget).

The participants will be given the opportunity to take part in the event and interact through a session of questions and answers.

The Forum will also give the floor to representatives of civil society to express a diversity of opinions on the question how to drive the transition to sustainable growth and to quality jobs?

It will be a good occasion to hear NGOs, officials, industries and academics giving their vision on how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, minimise energy and water waste, improve low-carbon mobility, to move to more sustainable and long-term resilient business models.

The Progressive Economy Forum - an initiative of the Socialists and Democrats Group in the European Parliament - is an event where speakers come with refreshing opinions and ideas to rethink the future of our society.
