At its meeting in Strasbourg today, the S&D Group nominated three candidates to be vice-presidents of the European Parliament. The three candidates are Corina Creţu (Romania), Sylvie Guillaume (France) and David Sassoli (Italy) and the elections will take place tomorrow during the first plenary session of the newly elected Parliament.

The Group also nominated Polish MEP Bogusław Liberadzki as the S&D candidate to be one of the European Parliament's quaestors (responsible for administrative and financial matters directly affecting MEPs).

Commenting on the nominations, S&D Group president Martin Schulz said:

"With the nomination of our Group's candidates for the European Parliament's vice-presidents and for the post of quaestor, we have sent a strong signal to the Parliament with members coming from the east, west and south of Europe and with a strong gender balance.

"The Parliament plays a decisive role in the EU policy-making process today and in recent years it has become even stronger and more political. It is vital to have experienced and active S&D representatives leading this institution and I am sure that our candidates will be able to fulfil these roles successfully."
