Following the announcement by the UN of the formation of a national unity government in Libya, Gianni Pittella, president of the Socialist and Democrat Group in the European Parliament, said:
 
"The agreement reached in Libya, after several months of difficult talks, is the step required for concrete solutions to the conflict.
 
"I congratulate the Libyan people because this agreement provides opportunity for a stable, democratic and prosperous future.
 
"I warmly commend the tireless efforts by Bernardino León, the Secretary-General’s Special Representative and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya, who has facilitated the agreement and I call on both sides in Libya to fully respect and back the UN deal which is in the interest of Libyan citizens.
 
"I call on to the EU to facilitate in the institutional building of a new democratic, peaceful and inclusive Libya."
 
S&D MEP and president of the PES, Sergei Stanishev said:

"Libyan people have suffered for too long from the lack of stability caused by the failure to form a government. I trust and hope that this agreement for a national unity government will be respected by all sides and will therefore lead to a more peaceful, and more stable future for them.
 
"I congratulate those who have worked tirelessly for an agreement on a unity government in Libya. The UN deal is a fair, forward looking way to exit this political crisis. The EU has played an important role in this deal and we will keep supporting the work of EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in this endeavour."
