Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament strongly condemn the terrorist attacks in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt that caused a high number of casualties. We express our condolences to the families of the victims. We are steadfast and resolute in our support for the Egyptian people and government in their fight against terrorism.

Terrorists aim at undermining our societies and way of life. This is our common fight. By standing united we will not let them prevail. The perpetrators of this heinous crime and their sponsors should be brought to justice.

We re-confirm our robust commitment to the fight against terrorism, which should be conducted in full respect for international humanitarian and human rights law.

S&D MEP and vice-president for foreign affairs, Victor Boştinaru, said:

"This week has been a dramatic one for Egypt, with two major terrorist attacks against the general prosecutor in Cairo and against military checkpoints in Northern Sinai. These were attacks against the heart of the Egyptian state. We understand the extremely high pressure the Egyptian authorities and people are experiencing, and we stand by them. Daesh will not achieve their objective of destabilising Egypt and the entire region. These attacks, together with those in Tunisia, Kuwait and all the other recent attacks show once again the necessity for the international community to be united, firm and coordinated in its efforts against the global threat of terrorism."
