Quote of the week by S&D president, Gianni Pittella

We cannot accept the sacrifice of a common European future as a result of the short-sightedness of the Council or because of a fear of possible outcomes of national elections.

There is so much left to do: we need a strong social pillar to protect our citizens. A European fiscal capacity. We must complete the European Monetary Union. And build a sustainable Europe capable of fighting climate change and creating jobs and growth. We must combat tax fraud. And the project of a common European army is now more important than ever.

All of this can only be done if we stay united as Europeans!

Is it really too much to ask of this generation of leaders to commit to the future of Europe? Let us not give up, let us show political leadership and fight together for a stronger, united and progressive Europe.

Past activities

During the last week we have focused on a series of topics that were debated during the mini plenary session held here in Brussels. Some of the key topics included: the detention of unaccompanied child migrants, funding for European creative, cultural and audiovisual sectors, protecting wildlife, the need for more women judges in the European Court of Justice, reducing the gender pay gap, Dieselgate, effective action against money laundering, the protection of workers and reactions to the Commission’s White Paper on the Future of Europe.

We are also proud to announce that we have launched a much-needed and long-awaited campaign on the European Pillar of Social Rights. Watch the video to find out more

Activities

An interesting and much-anticipated S&D conference on labour migration will take place next week. Registrations are still open and everyone is invited to join us.

We are also just a few weeks away from our #EuropeTogether event in Rome, where - alongside our partners - we will focus on the future of Europe.

The third edition of the School of Democracy is also getting closer now!

Upcoming activities

This year we will be celebrating the International Women’s Day by focusing on work-life balance. This is also, one of the key demands of our new campaign on Social Rights.

Equal treatment and rights for migrant workers (Labour Migration) is the hot topic of the moment and the subject of our event on the 8th of March. Our MEPs Udo Bullmann, Brando Benifei, Javi López and Marita Ulvskog will be joining the debate with European specialists. If you would like to join us, you can register online.

We also getting ready for our next #EuropeTogether event, alongside our sister organisations. It is scheduled to take place in Rome on 24 March, just one day before we celebrate 60 years since the signing of the Treaty of Rome.

Check our #EuropeTogether site for upcoming details and don’t forget to register now!

One more big event we are looking forward to in the coming months is the third edition of the School of Democracy. The lively and interactive event will be back for another session in April, in Reggio Emilia, Italy and we are looking forward to meeting 100 young democrats aged 18 to 25 from Europe and beyond in order to start a debate on the most important topics our Union is facing, both within and outside its borders.

Our MEPs and advisors will also be busy preparing the next plenary session in Strasbourg. Topics such as gun regulations, gender equality, circular economy and the follow-up to the EU summit will be on the agenda. Follow our site for daily updates!
