Quote of the week by S&D president, Udo Bullmann

“Europe needs to embark on a new path of economic and social development, one of sustainable equality and well-being for all. The Commission’s proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) seems not quite fit for the job. As the S&D Group, we have been advocating an MFF that is aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and supports the progressive transformation of the European society.”

The upcoming two weeks will be dedicated to both events and the preparation of the next Plenary session. Among the topics on the agenda for the upcoming Strasbourg session, we’ve got the implementation of the Common Agricultural Policy for young farmers, the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund or the implementation of the EU Youth Strategy.

May 5th will be an exciting day for our Group. Alongside all EU institutions, we will be opening our doors in Brussels for everyone to join us and talk about Europe and our plans, hopes and strategies. Our #EuropeTogether team and Ambassadors will also be there, so join us and learn more about how to improve the Europe we live in!

A PEST committee delegation, led by President Eric Andrieu, will be off to Parma, Italy, next Monday and Tuesday, on a fact-finding mission to EFSA to assess the capability and the efficiency of the European agency in guaranteeing food safety and the citizens' health. S&D PEST co-ordinator Pavel Poc and Simona Bonafe will also join the delegation.

Our Group is also getting ready for the Western Balkans Summit that we hope will inject some new energy into the enlargement process. The event is scheduled to take place in Sofia, Bulgaria, on May 17th, and ahead of it, a PES pre-summit meeting is scheduled. Our president Udo Bullmann will be attending.

On May 24 our MEPs Pier Antonio Panzeri and Soraya Post are hosting a conference on Climate/Environmental Refugees. Specialists and politicians will join the debate and registrations are open until Thursday, May 17th.

Also on the 24th of May, we are pleased to invite you to attend the conference on Ensuring Fair Mobility of Companies. The conference will provide an excellent opportunity to exchange views on the recently published legislative proposals of the European Commission within the "EU Company Law Package". The event will take place on Thursday, 24 May 2018, from 9:00 to 12:30, in room ASP 3G-3, in Brussels. Please register here by Tuesday 15 May 2018 at 18h00.

We are also getting closer to our fourth edition of the School of Democracy, from 6 - 8 June, in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Over the course of three days, 100 young people from both inside and outside the EU will discuss the major issues facing Europe and the world. Participants will have the chance to debate with experts from the political, economic and academic worlds.
