The European Socialists and Democrats are convinced that, during his hearing at the development committee, Commissioner-designate Neven Mimica demonstrated a strong political will and the capacity and knowledge necessary to successfully fulfill the obligations and commitments required for the position of commissioner for development. His replies to the numerous questions are in line with our priorities to eradicate poverty and reduce the inequalities between and within countries.

Ame Lietz, S&D MEP, said after the hearing:

“We welcome Mr. Mimica’s approach to tackling global challenges and crises through profound coordinated efforts between the Commission and member states. Presently we only react once a crisis has occurred and I am glad that the commissioner-designate intends to take a more preventive, prepared and coordinated approach, with the aim of an overall improvement in global health and an early reaction to challenges such as the current ebola outbreak."

S&D MEP and vice-president for foreign affairs, Knut Fleckenstein, said:

"We are satisfied with the Commissioner-designate’s commitment to some of our key priorities such as the financial transaction tax, the fight against tax evasion and the promotion of human rights, including sexual and reproductive health rights. He will have to be a political commissioner and we trust he will enforce policy coherence within the European Commission in relation to development and lead on the creation of an ambitious EU position in defining the new international development framework.

"We also positively note Neven Mimica’s readiness to work closely with the European Parliament and its committee on development, chaired by S&D MEP Linda McAvan.”
