Weekly Update - 14 to 18 March 2016

Quote of the week

The needs of women refugees have far too often been overlooked. Asylum is not gender neutral and our laws and policies must reflect that. We need a holistic approach which takes account of gender at every stage of the asylum process.

With delegations in several EU countries and an important EU summit happening in Brussels, we are heading into a busy week. Follow us on Facebook, Twitter and on our webpage for dailly updates.

This Saturday our President will join the PES leaders meeting in Paris. Hosted by French President, François Hollande, the meeting will give the participants the possibility to develop a new agenda for jobs and a new sustainable model for Europe, as well as a new definition for new social rights, especially for young Europeans.

On Monday a delegation led by our Group President will be on a visit to London to meet with UK Labour politicians, representatives of trade unions and leaders of the #BritainStrongerIn and #LabourIn campaigns.

Gianni Pittella will be joined by S&D bureau members Tanja Fajon, Maria João Rodrigues, Isabelle Thomas, Kathleen Van Brempt, Josef Weidenholzer, Péter Niedermüller and the head of the UK Labour delegation to the European Parliament Glenis Willmott.

Discussions will also be held on the upcoming UK referendum, as well as other important issues Europe is facing. You can find the full agenda of the visit here.

This upcoming week Brussels is hosting a meeting of the European Council. At their meeting, EU leaders will mainly discuss further steps to address the migration crisis and priorities for the 2016 European semester. You will be able to find further information on our website.
