Social rights in Europe

A stronger social Europe

The crisis and its long aftermath have made it clearer than ever that a Europe reduced to purely economic issues will lose the trust of citizens. The S&Ds want to see an EU true to the principles of the European treaties, where the goals are full employment, social equality, tackling social exclusion and ending poverty. The single market's economic freedoms should not be allowed to override fundamental social rights or undermine the power of regional and local authorities to provide public services.

We stand for a co-ordinated European employment strategy to create sustainable jobs. And we want to remove barriers that stop workers moving freely, for example through laws to make sure pensions and social rights can travel with you and to guarantee universal access to health and social security.
