A Home is a Right

Europeans are struggling with high housing costs, and we have been working to address this because we believe that everyone deserves an affordable, decent place to live. Put simply, we believe that having a home is a right for everyone. 

We have put housing on Europe’s radar. In recent years, we have secured the first-ever Commissioner for housing and established a special housing committee in the European Parliament. We voted for and passed proposals to tackle the housing crisis that will make a real difference in people’s lives.

But that is not enough for us. We wanted to hear what people think about this crisis and witness first-hand what they are going through.

First, we commissioned a survey. It showed that a vast majority of Europeans expect the EU to tackle the housing affordability crisis, guided by the principle that a home is a fundamental right, not a profit-driven asset.

Then, we travelled across Europe to speak with people who struggle to afford a decent place to live. They shared a glimpse of how the housing crisis has affected their lives and why having a home is so important to them.
