After the decision made by the Swedish government to recognise Palestine, Gianni Pittella, president of the Socialists and Democrats, stated:

The Swedish government took a fundamental and courageous step towards a two-state solution, the only one which could solve the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

We are convinced the European Union, as such, should be much more involved in the peace process, starting with the urgent recognition of the need to establish two different state entities capable of cooperating side by side for the sake of both Israeli and Palestinian people.

This is a fortunate day for Palestinian authorities as they see their political efforts in order to reach its legitimacy statehood recognised. Equally this is a fortunate day for Israel which can now, with reinforced conviction, negotiate a peace solution with President Abbas in order to see their right to live peacefully - and not under constant siege - finally recognised.

Socialists and Democrats will continue to work for a more effective genuine role of the European Union in the peace process, and are deeply convinced that a unique European voice could be the key factor for a comprehensive solution to the Israeli-Palestine conflict. #EUWakeUp
