Following the adoption of a critical opinion by the European Commission over the rule of law situation in Poland. The S&D Group President Gianni Pittella said:

“The Polish government has to start taking the concerns over the rule of law seriously. It is what underpins both our Union and what has made Poland such a success over the last 20 years. The respect of the rule of law is a common responsibility. The EU has a responsibility to intervene when it is seen to be under threat. This is not a political judgement or an undue interference into domestic politics. The EU is not there to play a schoolteacher role, however as with all other Member States Poland must abide by the common values and principles of the EU."

“We believe that dialogue is the right way forward. We support the European Commission´s efforts in maintaining this dialogue with Warsaw, despite the Polish government's unhelpful attitude. The Polish authorities are expected to fully comply with the recommendations of the Venice Commission and uphold the historical Polish tradition of freedom and democracy."
