The S&D Group in the European Parliament has called on the Governor of Arkansas to stop the scheduled executions of seven inmates this month.

In a joint statement, S&D Group vice president Elena Valenciano, the chair of the Parliament's Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) Pier Antonio Panzeri and the S&D Coordinator in DROI, Soraya Post said:

“We are deeply concerned by the scheduled executions of seven inmates on death row within eleven days starting next week. We call on Governor Hutchinson to stop what would be the most intense bout of judicial killings in modern US history and the first executions in the state of Arkansas for more than ten years.”

“The death penalty is a cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment, incompatible with human dignity and the respect of human rights"

"The S&D Group strongly opposes the death penalty in all circumstances and will continue working for an EU that promotes through all its means the universal abolition of the capital punishment, particularly in its relations with key like-minded countries."
