In the context of this year's World Press Freedom Day, the S&D Group, together with other political groups in the European Parliament, draws attention to the situation of Turkish journalists in jail. There will be this afternoon in the European Parliament a seminar from 17:00 - 18:30 in PHS 4B001 with the participation of the wives of jailed Cumhuriyet newspaper journalists and representative from PEN International, and an opening of an exhibition (area ASP - 5G at 18:30) on imprisoned Turkish writers and journalists.

On this occasion S&D MEP Kati Piri, the European Parliament’s rapporteur on Turkey, said:

“On the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day, we show our solidarity with the Turkish journalists that are in jail. With the exhibition in the European Parliament, political groups want to show the names behind the numbers. When a government thinks a pen is more dangerous than a gun, there is a problem with democracy.

“The S&D Group will urge the Commission to support free Turkish media, if necessary from abroad.”
