The S&D Group in the European Parliament welcomed today's resolution on Libya and expressed its solidarity with the suffering Libyan civilian population. The Group underlined that the current destabilisation of Libya and its institutions poses a grave threat to the region and the Libyan population.

S&D MEP and vice-president for foreign affairs Victor Boştinaru said:

"We condemn the violence – especially against civilians – and call on all parties involved to immediately cease all violent activities and to agree to a ceasefire. This is the only way to get to democratic dialogue.

"We urge all parties in the conflict to respect the principles of humanity, neutrality and impartiality. Everyone involved must ensure humanitarian assistance gets through, the civilians receiving assistance are protected and humanitarian personnel are safe.

"All parties must engage in an inclusive national dialogue in order to build a state which respects human rights, democracy and the rule of law.

"We call for all those responsible for violations of human rights and international humanitarian law to be held accountable."

S&D MEP Ana Gomes said:

"Europe cannot wait and watch Libya descend into chaos and become a sanctuary for terrorism on its doorstep. The EU must actively support the efforts of Bernardino Léon, the UN Special Representative in Libya, to promote a ceasefire between the warring parties and to initiate a process of inclusive dialogue on governance and national reconciliation.

"Security is essential for governance: the EU must lead and participate in a concerted international effort, including the involvement of Libya's neighbours, to work on disarming the armed groups and training national security forces, under central command, in Libya."
