Socialist and Democrat MEPs have outlined their priorities for the EU's cohesion policy in a new paper released today. The paper focuses on the importance of cohesion policy as the main investment instrument in the EU, a way of bringing regions closer to the Union and as the pillar that ensures solidarity between member states.

S&D vice-president Isabelle Thomas said:

"Cohesion policy has proved itself to be invaluable in bringing European regions and people closer together. We believe it is essential that it remains an EU-wide policy that gives access to resources, experience and assistance to all regions across Europe. We want greater focus to be given to the development of urban areas, whilst also ensuring that outermost and sparsely populated regions are given special consideration."

"In terms of priorities we must now focus cohesion spending on boosting innovation and research, improving skills and employment, supporting SMEs and combatting inequalities and social exclusion. Used alongside the Juncker Plan, cohesion policy is an essential tool to boost the investment we want in Europe."

S&D coordinator for cohesion policy, Constanze Krehl added:

"Cohesion policy sends a strong message of solidarity both between countries and between people. Considering the challenges Europe is facing - in terms of the economic, financial and refugee crises - this is more essential than ever. It helps us show that we do have a common purpose and by strengthening the individual parts of Europe it strengthens the whole project."

"Cohesion policy can also play a strong role in helping to address climate change by channelling investments into projects that support the shift towards a low-carbon economy and the use of renewable energy. This can send a strong message to other parts of the world in light of the upcoming UN Climate Conference in Paris."
