Quote of the week by S&D president Iratxe García on the significance of the Fit for 55 climate package:

“Reaching our climate objectives will be the most ambitious political project of our time. It is a project where everyone will have to contribute, but we are convinced that unless what we ask from our citizens is socially just then we risk running into a disaster.

As of now, I can guarantee that my group will work constructively and analyse in depth all the proposals to make sure that the whole of this package will contribute to the implementation of the European Pillar of Social Rights and at the same time deliver real emissions reductions, leaving no one behind.”

Next week

One week to go before the summer break. And what a week!

We’re starting already today, with an online discussion on protecting the rule of law in Europe. Our MEP and European Parliament vice-president Katarina Barley will join Peter Matjašič from the Open Society Initiative for Europe for a lunchtime online chat, from 13:00-13:30. Follow it live on Facebook and on www.socialistsanddemocrats.eu.

Next week we’ll be keeping a close eye on the 2021 Rule of Law Report. It monitors significant developments relating to the rule of law in all member states and we’ve got a couple of them on our list that are worthy of (dis)honourable mentions!

Also next week we expect the European Commission to come forward with the new basket of Own Resources. This is part and parcel of the Next Generation EU recovery fund, as it constitutes the means to finance the Union’s common debt.

Next week, the Commission is expected to come forward with proposals to tackle money laundering in the EU. The S&D Group has long pushed for a single rulebook on anti-money laundering to stop criminals hiding and spending illegal money by exploiting the EU’s fragmented system.

And it’s a wrap for another challenging season. Looking forward to e-meeting you all in September!
Until then, from all of us in the S&D Group - have a restful summer break and stay safe!

And don’t forget to stay updated on all our initiatives and reactions on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
