The Security and Defence subcommittee is an important forum for fostering debate and examining security and defence policy developments in terms of institutions, capabilities and operations.

S&D MEPs hold decision-makers to account on security and defence policy.

Our priorities
UN and EU flags together

The S&D Group successfully translates its core values into the field of defence through its ambition for the EU to be a global actor for peace.

Our goal is a comprehensive EU defence policy striving to maintain international peace, security and support for the rules-based international order. We encourage closer defence co-operation with our partners within our neighbourhood and with the UN and NATO, while working on the path towards EU strategic autonomy.

Promoting sustainable peace and prosperity, and overcoming, preventing and de-escalating conflicts worldwide are the highest priorities for the S&Ds. Increasingly, we have to engage with actors who do not share our values and are openly hostile to our vision of peace and prosperity for the world. In light of that, the S&Ds work hard to enhance the EU’s capabilities to respond, counter and prevent threats to our members and rule-based order as a whole.

Ensuring democratic oversight, legitimacy and inclusive engagement in the field of defence remains crucial. We are working towards setting up an ambitious EU agenda for global arms control, non-proliferation and disarmament, making the world as a whole a safer and more peaceful place.
