All of us in the S&D Group wish a calm and peaceful break to all those celebrating Easter. We will be back on 19 April, with constitutive meetings of the 2 new committees in the European Parliament.
Following our request, the Parliament has decided to set up a 38-member Special Committee on “COVID-19 pandemic: lessons learned and recommendations for the future”. Its aim is to look into the European response to the pandemic in the areas of health, democracy and fundamental rights, economy and society, and the EU’s global relationships.
The second one, “Committee of inquiry to investigate the use of the Pegasus and equivalent surveillance spyware”, will investigate alleged breaches of EU law in the use of the surveillance software by, among others, Hungary and Poland, where Pegasus spyware was allegedly used against journalists, politicians and lawyers. The latest media reports that Senior officials at the European Commission were also targeted last year with spy software designed by an Israeli surveillance firm, makes this special Pegasus committee even more relevant.
