European citizens want change. In May, people sent us a strong message. We are listening and we are ready to respond. With 10 nominees, the S&D team is the leading force in the Commission over the next five years.
As the President of the S&D Group in the European Parliament, I sent a letter to the Commission president-elect in July on behalf of our political family. We were and we continue to be very demanding of the political agenda of the next Commission. Our citizens expect us to build a Europe based on equality, solidarity, sustainability and social justice. You can read about our demands in more detail on this page. With the S&D team leading the way with the next Commission and working together with progressive MEPs, we can bring about the change that Europe needs.
- Iratxe García Pérez
S&D Group President
Before the new Commission takes office, Parliament organises public hearings. As a Group, S&D MEPs will carefully assess each commissioners’ suitability for the job during three-hour hearings, streamed live, through the parliamentary committee responsible for the portfolio they have been assigned. The S&D Group will evaluate the candidates on the basis of their commitment and their competence to accomplish the reforms needed to make Europe fairer and more sustainable.
During the October plenary session, Parliament will vote the new Commission into office. On this basis, and only when MEPs give the green light, the new commissioners can start their mandate to bring about change in Europe from 1 November.
