Reacting to the meeting between the leader of North Korea, Kim Jong-un and president of South Korea, Moon Jae-in, where both sides have agreed to rid the peninsula of nuclear weapons and push towards a peace treaty, S&D spokesperson on foreign affairs, Knut Fleckenstein, said:
"The historic meeting between Kim Jong-un and president Moon Jae-in is a very important signal in these challenging times for international cooperation. It demonstrates that negotiations and dialogue can be an effective means to build trust and de-escalate tensions. We congratulate leaders Kim Jong-un and president Moon Jae-in for the necessary decision to come together and start talking.
"I hope that this gleam of hope will show some other European, Russian and American politicians that getting together around the same table to discuss and listen is the only successful model to find diplomatic solutions."
