Following a 16-hour teleconference meeting, Eurozone finance ministers were not able to reach an agreement on how to respond to the economic and social crisis caused by the COVID-19.

The leader of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament Iratxe García said:

“I praise the efforts made by Mário Centeno to find a compromise and I strongly hope that all Eurozone finance ministers will be able to think of our future together when they resume their discussions tomorrow.

“There must be a robust European response to the COVID-19 crisis, based on solidarity. European citizens would not understand if the EU remained passive. The economic and social consequences would also turn into a political crisis of the whole Union.
