Speaking on the EU contribution to a Sahel regional force, S&D Group president Gianni Pittella said:

“Investing in security and in the fight against terrorism in Africa means investing in security and defence in Europe. This is why the S&D Group warmly welcomes the EU diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini’s decision to contribute 50 million Euros, in the framework of Sahel G5, to the creation of a multinational military force able to fight terrorism, cross-border crime and trafficking of human beings in the Sahel region. Supporting the efforts put forward by Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad and Burkina Faso is crucial to stabilize the Sahel region, which is of fundamental geopolitical and economic importance.

“Security is a key element that must go hand in hand with development and stability. It is a pre-condition for development and boosting growth and education in Africa. Investing in Africa is in Europe’s direct interest and important to prevent the mass flows of migrants to Europe in the long-term.”
