Speaking on his decision to stand for election in the upcoming Italian elections, S&D Group president Gianni Pittella, said:

“I will run as a candidate in the Italian elections as president of the S&D Group, the most progressive and pro-European group in the European Parliament. The upcoming Italian elections will not only be decisive for Italy but for the whole of Europe.

“For the last twenty years Europe has been the battle of my life. Now I am called upon to lead this battle in Italy against those that want to see the EU crumble. All my passion, all my experience and efforts have been devoted to the construction of a progressive European Union investing in growth, social justice and solidarity while fighting against national selfishness, xenophobia, blind austerity and fiscal fraud.

“The battle for a better Europe continues also in the EU Parliament. Hence, during the time of the campaign trail in Italy, the S&D Group will keep on fighting our battles. Udo Bullmann, in his capacity as first vice-president, with the contribution of all vice-presidents and in close cooperation with the Heads of Delegations, will coordinate this phase.

“Our common battle continues, in Brussels and in every single member state. Together, we can and we will build a better and fairer society for all.”
